Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a domestic T20 tournament in India. Organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), this tournament is named after former Test cricketer Syed Mushtaq Ali.
Although India is home to one of the best T20 franchise tournaments in the world, the Indian Premier League, it is the SMAT that is the original domestic T20 tournament in India.
The tournament had its origins in 2006-07, when it was first played and was won by Tamil Nadu. The tournament is contested by the teams involved in the Ranji Trophy, except in 2016-17.
The SMAT went through a number of changes in format, and the current format was relaunched in 2017, when BCCI reverted to the Ranji Teams. The number of teams has been increased to 38, and the knockout stage has been restored.
This tournament is a hotbed for talent scouts from the IPL teams, making the SMAT a good platform for many young players in India.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Format & Teams
The 38 teams are divided into five elite groups - A, B, C, D and E. There used to be a Plate Group in the past, but that’s no longer the case.
Groups A, B, and C have eight teams and play seven matches each. The other two groups have seven teams, and each team will play six matches.
The top-ranked team in each group will qualify for the knockouts along with the three best runners-up. That makes it eight quarter-finalists, followed by two semi-finals, and the final.
Tamil Nadu is the most successful team in the history of the SMAT, winning three times. Mumbai won it twice, including the latest edition that ended in November 2024.
