Pakistan vs India Champions Trophy

It’s inarguably the most followed match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as arch-rivals Pakistan and India clash in match #5 of the tournament with their future in the tournament on the line. This match will be played at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, starting from 2:30 pm IST.

Pakistan made an inauspicious start, losing to New Zealand, and another loss here will be curtains to their chances of progression. India started with a win over Bangladesh and will have one foot in the semis with a win. The absence of Fakhar Zaman puts further pressure on the hosts, and I am backing India to post the highest opening partnership (o/p) of the match.

  • India posted the highest O/P in 2 of their last 3 matches (ODIs).
  • Pakistan conceded the highest O/P in 4 of their last 7 matches (ODIs).
  • India posted the highest O/P in 4 of their last 5 completed matches against Pakistan (ODIs).

Head to Head

It is Pakistan who lead the head-to-head record against India in the ODIs, winning 73 of the 135 matches. India won 57, while five finished without any result.

Recent record favours India, though, with seven wins in their last eight completed ODIs. The only blemish in this sequence is a 180-run thrashing in the final of the Champions Trophy in the last edition.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan started their defence of the Champions Trophy in the worst possible manner, losing by 60 runs in the tournament opener to New Zealand on Wednesday in Karachi.

That defeat makes this a must-win, as another loss could put them out of contention for a top-two finish in Group A, which also has New Zealand and Bangladesh.

The heavy defeat took a toll on Pakistan’s run rate (minus 1.2). Only Naseem Shah (2 for 63) looked impressive with the ball against the Kiwis. Khushdil Shah (69 off 49) and Salman Agha (42 off 28) showed some urgency with the bat. Babar Azam picked up a painstakingly slow 64 off 90 runs, which stifled their momentum in the big chase.

Pakistan Team News

Fakhar Zaman is out of the tournament, and the hosts brought in Imam-ul-Haq as his replacement. They can blood him straight into the playing XI and drop Babar back to his familiar no. 3 slot or get Kamran Ghulam into the middle order. Tayyab Tahir’s place could come under scrutiny as well.

India Form

Building on the momentum of a series whitewash over England, India started with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh at this venue on Thursday.

The Men in Blue will target another win, as losing here will make their final game against the in-form New Zealand a must-win. They have a positive net run rate (0.408) from the first match, which is another positive.

Mohammed Shami (5 for 53) and Axar Patel (2 for 43) sparkled with the ball against Bangladesh, while the chase was anchored by Shubman Gill (101 not out) with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul hitting 41s.

India Team News

Harshit Rana took three wickets and may retain his place ahead of Arshdeep Singh. There’s a case to include Varun Chakaravarthy, but he may struggle to get a game ahead of Kuldeep Yadav.

Verdict

India dominated the recent ODI results against Pakistan and will be confident ahead of this game. Playing a home game in Dubai is nothing new for Pakistan, but they are likely to feel the after-effects of that drubbing at the hands of New Zealand. With so much uncertainty over their opening partnership, Pakistan could struggle to get a good start. I am backing India to post the highest o/p.
