New Zealand vs England Second Test

England’s comprehensive win in the first match could end up being the showstopper for New Zealand’s hopes in the WTC final race. The teams get ready to meet at the Basin Reserve in Wellington for the second Test starting on Friday.

New Zealand’s slim hopes of staying in the race to the finale are scuppered, although they still have a mathematical chance. For all their obsession with aggressive gameplay, England showed in Christchurch that they can be consistent. I feel they have enough in the tank to win again.

Head to Head

New Zealand played England in 114 Tests so far, and the record is skewed in favour of the Poms. The Kiwis won just 13, lost 53, and the remaining 47 ended in draws.

The first match in Christchurch saw New Zealand post 348 in the first innings, but the visitors responded with 499. The Kiwis could only muster 254 in the second innings, and the visitors chased the 104-run target within 13 overs.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand dropped to 5th in the WTC standings after the loss in the first Test and a three-point penalty, leaving them with 47.92 percentage points.

The Kiwis need to win both the remaining matches and hope for some help elsewhere but need to find a way past England, their old nemesis. Kane Williamson had two fifties in the first match and looked like their best hope with the bat.

Matt Henry took four wickets and looked threatening, giving them some control, although William O’Rourke had a forgettable outing.

New Zealand Team News

Mitchell Santner joins the squad but is unlikely to get a game here, although O’Rourke’s place could be up for grabs.

England Form

England is 6th in the WTC standings despite that win in the first match, with only 42.5 percentage points. They aren’t in the race to qualify for the final, although they could spoil New Zealand’s hopes with a win.

The visitors scored big in the first innings in Christchurch with Harry Brook’s 171 leading the way. There were good returns from almost every batter fifth onwards in the lineup.

The star of the show was Brydon Carse, who took ten wickets in the match and scooped the man of the match award. Shoaib Bashir’s four wickets in the first innings were also a game changer.

England Team News

Ben Stokes had an injury scare in the first Test, but he shrugged it off to declare himself fit for this game. England announced an unchanged XI, barring last-minute hiccups.

Verdict

New Zealand was found short of ideas in the first Test, where their catching let them down. Captain Tom Latham would hope for an improvement, while England seems to be ticking most of the boxes. It’s difficult to predict which England side will turn up here, but I am hoping they turn up well, as I am backing them to win. Keep an eye on the odds for Harry Brook once again being the best batter for England.
