Australian Cricket
Australia is arguably the greatest powerhouse in cricket with several World Cup wins in the white-ball format.
Australia has won the men’s ODI World Cup a world-leading six times, with titles in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023. The women’s national team is also the most successful in world cricket with seven titles.
The strength of Australia’s domestic set-up has lent itself to unparalleled success on the international stage.
Australia’s domestic scene is broadly divided into the six main states in the country: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.
These teams participate in the longer men’s formats: first-class cricket (called the Sheffield Shield) and 50-over cricket (known as the One Day Cup).
In 2011, the city-based Big Bash League (BBL) replaced the traditional 20-over tournament, called the Twenty20 Big Bash, which was played from the 2005-06 season till 2010-11.
The women’s domestic set-up includes the Women’s Big Bash League, which is one of the most popular women’s T20 domestic competitions in the world, and the Women’s National Cricket League (NCL), which is a limited-overs tournament played in various formats since its inception in 1996-97.

Eight teams participate in the annual tournament: Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.
The tournament format has already witnessed several changes with iterations that include a shortened competition from the double round-robin form before a playoffs series.

The One Day Cup is Australia’s List A 50-over tournament, with the six states participating in the annual tournament.
The first edition of the One Day Cup was back in 1969-70.
The competition has undergone several changes through the decades, including a single round-robin followed by the finals, which is the most popular format of the One Day Cup.
WBBL
The Women’s Big Bash League is the premier women’s T20 competition in Australia with its first edition back in 2015-16. The WBBL replaced the Australian Women’s T20 Cup, which was played between 2007-08 and 2014-15.
