South African Cricket
South Africa is one of 12 Test-playing nations in international cricket, with a rich history that dates back more than a century. South Africa were first granted Full Member status by the ICC in 1909. Cricket South Africa is the official governing body for the top tier level of cricket in the region. The men’s cricket team is often called the Proteas, named after South Africa’s national flower, Protea Cynaroides.
South Africa hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2003 and the first edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007. South Africa first played a Test match in 1889 against West Indies (South Africa was the third Test-playing nation in the world), their first ODI was in 1991 against India (in the post-Apartheid era) and their first T20 was in 2005 against New Zealand.
South Africa’s domestic structure began back in 1889-90, when their first-class competition started. The structure is broadly classified into conferences in South Africa, which has remained similar, apart from a few changes to the formats over the last century.
How To Stream Cricket in South Africa
There are several ways to stream cricket matches played in South Africa. The country’s premier cricket sports channel is SuperSport, which broadcasts almost all professional matches in the region on television.
You can also find a few domestic matches on Cricket South Africa’s official YouTube channel. You can follow some matches on Cricket South Africa’s website. However, the availability of a live stream will depend on your jurisdiction.
CSA 4-Day Series
The CSA 4-Day Series is the premier first-class tournament in South Africa, with participating teams from all nine provinces in the region. The first edition of the tournament was played in 1889-90, when it was called the Currie Cup. The competition has undergone several changes through the years, including a franchise system and a province-based format. The current form of the system is quite straightforward with a single round-robin format.
A team is awarded 16 points for an outright victory, a draw earns a team six points while a tie results in eight points awarded to each team. Similar to the County Championship in England, bonus points are awarded for each milestone earned. These include a batting bonus point for scoring 150 runs scored and a bowling bonus point awarded for every three wickets taken.
CSA One Day Cup
The CSA One Day Cup is the top-tier List A competition in South Africa. Similar to the 4-Day Series, the One Day Cup has also undergone several changes from its first edition back in 1981-82. The tournament is hosted by Cricket South Africa, with a double round-robin format followed by a playoffs series.
SA20
The SA20 is South Africa’s premier T20 franchise-based tournament. The competition first began in 2022-23, with six participating teams. Teams face each other in a double round-robin format followed by the playoffs.
The six teams in the SA20 are:
- MI Cape Town
- Durban Super Giants
- Joburg Super Kings
- Paarl Royals
- Pretoria Capitals
- Sunrisers Eastern Cape
In South Africa, you can watch the SA20 on SuperSport. In India, you can catch the tournament on the Sports18 Network and if you’re in the UK, you can watch the SA20 on Sky Sports.
