International Cricket
International cricket is the top level of recognition in the sport, played by tens of countries across the world, and governed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The main formats of international cricket are Tests, ODIs and T20 matches.
The top teams in international cricket are determined by ICC international rankings. Each team is awarded points for a series win on a weighted basis.
Based on these points, teams move up and down the rankings based on their most recent performances on the international stage (against other international teams).
ICC ODI World Cup
The ICC ODI World Cup is a quadrennial ODI tournament, organized by the International Cricket Council. The ODI World Cup is the most recognized cricket tournament in the world, played by the best international teams.
The first edition of the ODI World Cup was played in 1975 in England. Australia is the most successful team in the ODI World Cup, with wins in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023.
West Indies (1975 and 1979) and India (1983 and 2011) have won the World Cup twice while Pakistan (1992), Sri Lanka (1996) and England (2019) have won the World Cup once each.
The teams that participate in the World Cup are decided by a qualification phase, which includes regular matches and series as part of the format that eventually decides the teams that progress to the main tournament.
T20 World Cup
The T20 World Cup is the flagship T20 international cricket tournament, organized by the ICC. The T20 World Cup is held once every two years (biennially). The first edition of the T20 World Cup was held in 2007 in South Africa.
West Indies (2012 and 2016), India (2007 and 2024) and England (2010 and 2022) are the most successful teams in the T20 World Cup with two trophies apiece. Pakistan (2009), Sri Lanka (2014) and Australia (2021) have won the T20 World Cup once each.
Full Members of the ICC automatically qualify for the T20 World Cup while the remaining spots are usually filled through a qualification phase. In the T20 World Cup, a Super Over is played to decide the winner in the case of a tie.
ICC World Test Championship
The ICC World Test Championship is the newest international tournament, administered and governed by the ICC on a biennial basis.
All Test-playing nations participate in the World Test Championship by default. The top-two teams after the end of a league stage qualify for a Final.
Rankings are decided on a weighted average basis, depending on a cycle of matches that take place in a two-year period preceding the final.
The first edition of the World Test Championship was played in 2019-2021 (won by New Zealand). The second edition was won by Australia (2021-2023).
The winner of the World Test Championship is awarded the Test mace, the most coveted prize in Test cricket.
ICC Champions Trophy
The ICC Champions Trophy is an ODI tournament played once in four years. Originally called the ICC Knockout Trophy, the first edition was played in 1998 in Bangladesh.
The first two editions were played in Associate Member nations to develop the popularity of cricket in those countries: Bangladesh and Kenya.
Australia (2006 and 2009) and India (2002 and 2013) are the most successful teams in the ICC Champions Trophy. South Africa (1998), New Zealand (2000), Sri Lanka (2002), West Indies (2004) and Pakistan (2017) have won the tournament once each.

Up until 2005, the Women’s ODI World Cup was governed by the International Women’s Cricket Council (IWCC). Since 2005, when the ICC took over administration of the event, the Women’s ODI World Cup has been played on a quadrennial basis.
