Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder BBL Final

The Big Bash 2024/25 will come to a fitting end with the best side of the league phase meeting the best side on current form. It will be Hobart Hurricanes hosting the Sydney Thunder at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Monday with the match starting at 1:45 pm IST.

The Hurricanes topped the league and then defeated the Sydney Sixers to confirm their spot in the Final at the first time of asking. The Thunder qualified third and then won the Knockout and the Challenger to reach this game. It’s tough to pick one side on current form, and I am backing the Hurricanes to score the most 6s.

Head to Head

The Hobart Hurricanes played 21 matches against the Sydney Thunder so far, with the Hurricanes winning 13 and losing eight.

The teams met twice in this season, with the first match in Sydney abandoned without even a toss. In the reverse fixture at this venue, the Hurricanes won by six wickets. The Thunder scored 164 for 6 batting first, with David Warner scoring 88 off 66 balls. The Hurricanes eased the chase within 17 overs, with Tim David blasting 68* off 38 balls.

Hobart Hurricanes Form

The Hurricanes topped the group phase in this season with seven wins and two losses out of their ten matches. They later went on to defeat the Sydney Sixers by 12 runs in the qualifier.

Hobart is yet to win a Big Bash title in their history, with two runners-up performances in 2013-14 and 2017-18 being their best in this competition.

The hosts have been the standout team this year, bouncing back from getting out for 74 against the Melbourne Renegades. Their revival is led by their impeccable record in Hobart, with the Hurricanes winning all six matches at this venue this year. Leading their charge is Mitchell Owen (344 runs) and Riley Meredith (13 wickets).

Hobart Hurricanes Team News

The Hurricanes slotted Chris Jordan at seven in the Qualifier, and it remains to be seen if they replace one of the bowlers to give better batting balance to the side.

Sydney Thunder Form

The Sydney Thunder finished 3rd in the regular season with five wins and three losses, to go with two no results. This is a side that has bounced back from the disappointment of finishing last season with just one win.

The Thunder won this tournament back in 2015-16 but have also finished 8th in five campaigns, so they have been swinging all over the place.

The presence of David Warner (357 runs) has been a huge boost for their batting, to go with his impressive captaincy. With the ball, there have been collective performances, although Chris Green and Wes Agar combined to take 23 wickets.

Sydney Thunder Team News

The visitors made one change to their squad for the final, with Ollie Davies replacing Blake Nikitaras. It could be interesting to see if he slots straight back in, replacing Hugh Weibgen.

Verdict

Hobart Hurricanes v Sydney Thunder - T20

The Hurricanes have been impeccable at this venue this season, but don’t rule out the Thunder. They have been in top form themselves and would love to give one final push. Either way, it is difficult to pick one winner, and I am leaning on the sixes market and backing the Hurricanes to hit the most 6s of the match.
