Bulgaria Cricket
While Bulgaria is not a widely-recognised name in international cricket, they have started to find consistency in the lower levels of the game in the last decade. The ICC (International Cricket Council) awarded Bulgaria with Affiliate status in June 2008.
The history of cricket in Bulgaria dates back to the early 20th century, where diplomats from England brought the game to Bulgaria. However, cricket was considered a bad influence under the communist regime in Bulgaria, which resulted in the game being suspended.
In 2002, cricket found universal acceptance with the formation of the Bulgarian Cricket Federation (BCF). One year later, the first National Cricket Championship was held after the Bulgarian Ministry of Sport recognized cricket as a new sport. Within five years, Bulgaria received Affiliate status.
History Of Bulgaria Cricket
Bulgaria played their first international game in 2004. In 2009, Bulgaria participated in the ICC European Championship – Division 5 in Greece. In 2013 and 2014, Bulgaria also participated in the Continental Cricket Cup. Bulgaria went on to finish second in the Balkan Senior Championship in 2015. The women’s national team played their first official tournament in 2014.
In 2017, the ICC awarded Bulgaria with Associate member status. In 2018, the ICC gave full T20I status to its members. In October 2019, Bulgaria played their first T20I against Serbia in the Hellenic Premier League.
