Bangladesh vs New Zealand Champions Trophy
Bangladesh face an uphill battle to stay alive in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as they play New Zealand in their second match of the tournament. This Group A match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on Monday is a day/night game starting at 2:30 pm IST.

Contrasting results in their tournament openers put Bangladesh and New Zealand on a collision path here. A loss will send Bangladesh out of the tournament, barring a mathematical miracle. New Zealand can confirm their place with a win, especially if India wins against Pakistan on Sunday. The Kiwis are in good form and should keep their momentum intact with another win.
- New Zealand won 6 of their last 7 matches (ODIs).
- Bangladesh lost their last 5 matches (ODIs).
- Bangladesh lost 12 of their last 13 matches against New Zealand (ODIs).
Head to Head
This is a fixture that’s heavily dominated by New Zealand. In the 45 ODIs played so far between these teams, Bangladesh could only win 11. The Kiwis won 33, while one match ended without any result.
The last time these sides played was in December 2023 in a three-match series in New Zealand. The Kiwis won that series 2-1, with Bangladesh’s only win coming in the last match.
Bangladesh Form
Bangladesh started their campaign with a six-wicket loss to India in Dubai last Thursday. It was a result that was determined largely in the first nine overs of the match.
The Tigers were reduced to 35 for 5 in 8.3 overs, and they couldn’t completely recover from that. Towhid Hridoy played a scintillating knock (100), but the total of 228 all out proved to be inadequate.
Rishad Hossain (2 for 38) tried his bit to give them a chance with the ball, but Bangladesh were always playing catch-up. Soumya Sarkar scored a hundred in the latest three-match series between these sides and could be itching for an impact here.
Bangladesh Team News
Nasum Ahmed was unlucky not to play against India, and Bangladesh may be tempted to include him in place of Tanzim Hasan. Mahmudullah pulled out of India’s match with a strained calf muscle in the training but could be fighting fit here. That may mean a bench role for either Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan, or Mushfiqur Rahim.
New Zealand Form
The Kiwis are one of the favourites for this tournament, considering their impressive run of form in recent times. Living up to those expectations, they started with a clinical 60-run win over hosts Pakistan in the first match of the series in Karachi last Wednesday.
It was a match decided by hundreds from Will Young (107) and Tom Latham (118), with Glenn Phillips playing his part (61). Their total of 320 for 5 was a very competitive one and, in the end, proved to be more than sufficient.
The bowlers played their part well, stifling the chase at regular intervals. William O'Rourke (3 for 47) and Mitchell Santner (3 for 66) were among the wickets, while Matt Henry (2 for 25) was effective.
New Zealand Team News
Rachin Ravindra’s fitness is the only concern ahead of this match, and his return could be at the expense of Nathan Smith.

Verdict
New Zealand have dominated Bangladesh in recent times and have also started well in this tournament. The Bangla Tigers have complicated their chances with a loss to India and can’t risk another defeat here. Yet, can they turn their fortunes around? It looks highly unlikely based on recent results, and I am backing New Zealand to win this match.
