Bangladesh is coming off a series loss in India, but they have had their moments there. This could be their best chance to beat South Africa, a Test team they have never beaten. Put your money on a home win.
- South Africa have lost their previous 9 matches played in Asia (Tests)
- South Africa drew their last 2 matches in Bangladesh (Tests)
- Bangladesh won 3 of their last 6 matches played at home (Tests)
- Bangladesh won 2 of their last 3 matches played at this venue (Tests)
Head to Head
These teams have played in 14 Tests so far, with the results completely favoring the African nation. South Africa won 12 and drew two of those matches.
Both the draws have on their last trip to Bangladesh in 2015, when the games in Chattogram and Mirpur ended with honors even.
Bangladesh Form
Bangladesh is seventh in the WTC standings with three wins and five losses from their eight Tests. They realistically have no chances of making it to the finals, even if they win these two matches as well as the next two against the West Indies.
The hosts are coming off a 2-0 series loss against India, which negated the positives of a 2-0 series win against India. Even at home, they have lost their last three Tests in a row, two against Sri Lanka and one versus New Zealand.
This series was expected to be Shakib Al Hasan’s farewell, but the left-handed all-rounder is ruled out of the first Test. It will be new coach Phil Simmons’ first series under charge as he replaces the ousted Chandika Hathurasinghe as head coach.
Bangladesh Team News
Hasan Murad has been drafted in as Shakib’s replacement, and it will be interesting to see who gets to replace the all-rounder.
South Africa Form
South Africa is currently fifth in the WTC standings with two wins, one draw, and three losses. They have six matches left and will have to win at least five to qualify for the final.
The Proteas are coming off a 1-0 series win in the West Indies, where they drew the first Test and then won the second by 40 runs. This was much-needed, as they lost three Tests in a row prior to this series.
The visitors named three spinners for the series, with Senuran Muthusamy joining Dane Piedt and Keshav Maharaj. Nandre Burger has been ruled out due to an injury, while Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee are not selected.
South Africa Team News
South Africa could be choosing between Ryan Rickleton and Tristan Stubbs for the middle order, while it could be a toss-up between Lungi Ngidi and Senuran Muthusamy for the last bowler’s spot.
