South Africa vs Sri Lanka Second Test

A comprehensive win in the first Test kept South Africa in the hunt for a place in the WTC final, but they need to keep winning against Sri Lanka. The second and final Test of the series will be played at St George’s Park in Gqeberha from Thursday.

It was a meltdown from Sri Lanka in the first Test that handed the Proteas a win, although it came at a cost as they lost some key players to injuries. Will that hamper their plans for this match? I am backing the Lankans to improve and win on a pitch that could suit their plans.

Head to Head

There have been 32 Tests between these two nations, with nine wins for Sri Lanka, 17 wins for South Africa, and six draws.

The first Test was won by South Africa very comprehensively, by a 233-run margin. The Proteas will be wary of the visitors, having lost at this venue when the sides last met here in 2019.

South Africa Form

South Africa climbed to 2nd in the WTC standings after a win in the first Test, followed by favourable results elsewhere. They have 59.26 percentage points and have two more Tests at home against Pakistan in this cycle.

The Proteas have given themselves a great chance of qualifying for the final, as they need two more wins from the remaining three matches.

Temba Bavuma was the star of the batting show in Durban with 70 and 113 in the two innings. Tristan Stubbs also got a century in the second innings. With the ball, Marco Jansen took 11 wickets in the match, including a smashing 7 for 13 in the first innings.

South Africa Team News

Wiaan Mulder and Gerald Coetzee are out of this Test with injuries, which opens the door for two of Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Paterson, and Kwena Maphaka, with the first two likely to get a nod.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka dropped to fourth after the first Test defeat and has 50 percentage points from ten matches. They still have a two-match series against Australia at home but have complicated their chances.

The Islanders need to win all three remaining matches to have any hopes, but even that will need results to go their way. Only two batters got into double digits in the first innings as they crashed out to just 42, conceding a lead of 149 in Durban.

That meant they had to chase 516 for a win, and although they improved, the second innings saw them muster only 282 with Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva scoring fifties. Prabath Jayasuriya and Vishwa Fernando picked up two wickets each, but otherwise the bowling didn’t quite fire.

Sri Lanka Team News

There are no injury concerns for the visitors, but Kasun Rajitha could be pushing for a start in place of Lahiru Kumara or Asitha Fernando.

Verdict

There’s no hiding the fact that South Africa outplayed Sri Lanka in Durban. They travel to another of their least-favoured venues, and that gives a slight advantage to Sri Lanka. It takes a strong-willed person to back Sri Lanka, and I am doing that, expecting them to bounce back here.
