The history of cricket in Malta dates back almost two centuries when the sport was played between the sailors of Lord Nelson’s fleet in the 1800s.

Several notable names have played in Malta, including WG Grace, who played for Lord Sheffield’s XI at the Royal Naval Ground in 1891. Wally Hammond also played for three years (1911 to 1914) in Malta while his father was stationed as a Corporal in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Malta became an Affiliate Member of the International Cricket Council in 1988. Malta have made rapid progress over the last few decades, and were even awarded Associate Member status of the ICC in 2017. Cricket in Malta is administered by the Malta Cricket Association (MCA). The Marsa Sports Club is Malta’s top facility for cricket in the country.

Malta played their first ever official international game in an ODI against England at the Naval Ground in October 1891. Their first ever T20IU was against Spain at the La Manga Club in Cartagena in March 2019.

Malta has participated in over 15 international competitions since 1990. Malta placed third in the ECC Trophy in 2001, their best performance in ICC Europe tournaments.
