    UAE Cricket

The United Arab Emirates is an emerging nation on the international stage in men’s cricket, particularly in white-ball cricket. The UAE was awarded Affiliate Member status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1989. One year later, UAE was granted Associate Member status, in 1990.

    History of UAE Cricket

The Emirates Cricket Board governs cricket in the UAE, including all four major councils: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai and Sharjah. The men’s team won the ACC Trophy four times between 2000 and 2006 while UAE finished as runners-up on the other three instances the competition was played, in 1996, 1998 and 2008.

Cricket was brought to the UAE (then called the Trucial States) towards the end of the 19th century by the British Army. Through the Second World War, cricket gained ground in the region by troops and army personnel stationed in the UAE, particularly from the Commonwealth countries.

The UAE won the ICC Trophy in 1994, the same year they played their first official ODI, which was against India in Sharjah in April 1994. UAE also participated in the Asia Cup in 2004 and 2008. UAE finished second behind Scotland in the 2014 ICC World Cup qualifier, which helped them gain an entry into the 2015 ICC ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. UAE lost all six matches they played in the 2015 ICC ODI World Cup.

    Advent Of T20s

UAE’s first official T20I was against Netherlands in Sylhet in March 2014. The UAE qualified to the group stage of the ICC World T20 in 2014 but finished without a win. UAE also made the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Ever since, UAE have been a consistent team in the lower-profile of the international stage, particularly against other Associate teams. UAE are not yet a Test-playing nation.
