Australia vs Pakistan First ODI
With contrasting backgrounds and future plans, Australia and Pakistan start their ODI series in Melbourne. This is the first of the three ODIs to be played at the MCG on Monday, to start at 9am IST.

Pakistan arrives here with a lot of changes in their set-up, most notably a new coach and a new captain. Mohammed Rizwan will look to make his side pugnacious like his game, although Australia and Pat Cummins will have other thoughts. The hosts will have half an eye on the upcoming Test series against India, but that doesn’t make them weaker by any means. I am backing the home team to come out top in the opening partnership charts.
- Australia posted the highest o/p in 5 of their last 7 matches against Pakistan (ODIs)
- Pakistan conceded the highest o/p in their last 3 away matches against Australia (ODIs)
- Pakistan conceded the highest o/p of the match in 5 of their last 6 matches (ODIs)
- Australia won 11 of their last 13 matches against Pakistan (ODIs)
Head to Head
There have been 108 ODIs between Australia and Pakistan so far, with Australia winning 70 and Pakistan winning only 34. Of the remaining, one ended in a tie and three had no results.
The sides last met in the ODI World Cup in Bengaluru in October 2023, when Australia won by 62 runs. That was their 11th win across 13 ODIs against the men from the subcontinent.
Australia Form
It’s an open secret that Australia is looking ahead to the arrival of India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Yet, they wouldn’t want to lose this series to Pakistan, although ODIs are a different cup of tea.
A lot of players are either rested, retired, or dropped for this series. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are on paternity leave, while Cameron Green is injured. David Warner is retired, but the likes of Cummins are expected to feature in at least two matches.
It will be interesting to see if the likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne will get some time off later in the series to prepare for the red-ball matches ahead.
Australia Team News
Australia announced their playing XI with Matt Short and Fraser-McGurk partnering at the top. Josh Hazlewood and Cooper Connolly are unavailable for the first match.
Pakistan Form
It would be a surprise, but Pakistan haven’t played an ODI since the World Cup. They are coming here on the back of some backroom and playing team changes, so there’s no relevance to the form book.
Mohammed Rizwan is the new white-ball captain, while Jason Gillespie is temporarily filling up as the coach. All eyes will be on former captain Babar Azam, who has been dropped for the Tests at home against England.
This series also marks the return of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, both looking to make a statement with their performances.
Pakistan Team News
Irfan Khan is set to make his debut in the middle order for the visitors. Four fast bowlers have been included in the playing XI, with Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain partnering Afridi and Shah.

Verdict
Australia has had the stick over Pakistan for a long time. They have mastered them in this format, although the two teams on display here are different from the ones that faced off in the World Cup. Regardless, Australia has an edge, thanks to their bowling unit, which looks strong with Cummins, Starc, and Zampa. I am putting my money on Australia scoring the most for the opening wicket.
