India vs England First ODI

A lot of questions will be put across to Team India as they play their first home ODI since losing the World Cup final in November 2023. England will be their opponents, who will be one of the favourites for the upcoming Champions Trophy. The first of the three ODIs will be played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday.

England’s strength is their aggressive template, although that backfired in the T20Is. Jos Buttler and his side are likely to stick to the same formula, which means there are set to be fireworks. I am backing England to score more 6s than their Indian counterparts.

  • India conceded the most 6s in 2 of their last 3 matches against England (ODIs).
  • England hit the most 6s in 3 of their last 6 matches (ODIs).
  • England hit the most 6s in their last 3 matches played in India (ODIs).

Head to Head

India has played England in 107 ODIs so far, with 58 wins for the Men in Blue against 44 losses. There were two tied matches, while three had no result.

The last time these sides met in a bilateral series was in July 2022, when India toured England and won 2-1. England’s last visit to India for a bilateral series was in March 2021, when they were beaten 2-1. In fact, India won four of their last five ODIs against England.

India Form

India’s last tryst with the ODIs was in August 2024 when they toured Sri Lanka and lost a three-match series 2-0 with one game tied. Their last game in India was the World Cup final in November 2023.

These three ODIs are the only preparation before the Champions Trophy, so India will hope their big guns fire. Rohit Sharma is back in the saddle, and so is Virat Kohli, although both had underwhelming performances in the Ranji Trophy after a disappointing Australian tour.

All eyes will be on the bowling composition, as India added Varun Chakaravarthy to their ODI squad after the mystery spinner picked up 14 wickets in the T20I series.

India Team News

Chakravarthy may have to wait for his turn, unless India decides to play him instead of Kuldeep Yadav. Harshit Rana, Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar, and Yashasvi Jaiswal are unlikely to play. Two of the three all-rounders, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel, will make it to the XI.

England Form

England last played this format last November when they toured the West Indies for a three-match series that they lost 2-1. Before that, they were beaten 3-2 in a five-match home series. Overall, the Three Lions lost six of their last nine ODIs.

The visitors have a lot to prove on this trip, as they look to formulate a template for ODIs with a focus on the Champions Trophy. They have a score or two to settle as well, having lost 24 of their last 30 ODIs in India against India.

The return of Joe Root, after his successful SAT20 tournament, adds bite to the English side. Despite their struggles with the bat in the T20s, England remains a dangerous side on their day.

England Team News

Jacob Bethell and Liam Livingstone could be battling for one all-rounder spot. Gus Atkinson, Jamie Smith, and Saqib Mahmood could be the others missing out.

Verdict

England hasn’t done great in the T20Is, but they can take advantage of India’s long gap since their last match in this format. To go with that, England’s aggressive template could suit these conditions. I am backing England to score the most 6s of the match.
