India vs England Third T20I

After two contrasting wins, India stands at the doorstep of taking an unassailable 3-0 lead against England in the five-match T20I series as the action moves west towards Rajkot. This third T20I at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Tuesday will be played from 7 pm IST.

England improved by leaps and bounds in the second match in Chennai compared to their first match, a damp squib. Yet, India had the right personnel to change gears and lead them to a tight win. Can they close the series here? It could be a flat pitch on offer here, and England may sense a chance, but it is the sixes market that I am still backing.

  • India scored the most 6s of the match in 8 of their last 10 matches (T20Is).
  • India hit the most 6s in 5 of their last 6 home matches (T20Is).
  • England conceded the most 6s in 2 of their last 4 completed matches (T20Is).
  • England lost their last 4 away matches to India (T20Is).

Head to Head

India played England in 26 T20Is so far, with 15 wins for India and 11 victories for England. The last time before this series they played was in the semi-final of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup when India won by 68 runs.

India won the first match at the Eden Gardens by seven wickets. The second match in Chennai on Saturday was closer, with India scraping past by two wickets.

India Form

India had contrasting wins in the series, with their comfortable seven-wicket win in Kolkata followed by an edge-of-the-seat, thrilling two-wicket victory in Chennai.

The architect of the second match win is Tilak Varma (72*), who has 91 runs in the series, the same as Abhishek Sharma (SR 227.50).

With the ball, it’s a case of the spinners dominating the proceedings for India. Varun Chakaravarthy (five wickets, ER 7.62) continues to bamboozle the batters, while Axar Patel (four wickets, ER 6.75) remains as frugal as ever.

India Team News

India may think about including Shami, especially as they were planning to use this series to test his fitness. Nitish Reddy and Rinku Singh are ruled out, with Ramandeep Singh and Shivam Dube added to the squad. One of those could replace Dhruv Jurel in the playing XI.

England Form

England’s ‘Bazball’ regime didn’t get a rousing start, as they failed to find the balance between aggression and acclimatising to the conditions.

Captain Jos Buttler (113 runs, SR 152.70) found the space to continue his love affair with Indian bowling, but the next best batter aggregated just 31 runs in the series.

Among the bowlers, it’s Brydon Carse (3 for 29) who lit up Chennai, while Jofra Archer (3 wickets) has managed to take wickets but struggled to keep the runs down (ER 10.12).

England Team News

Jacob Bethell’s injury opened the door for Jamie Smith in the second T20I and Smith impressed with his positive game. He could keep his spot for this match, which may mean one of Jamie Overton or Mark Wood will be rested.

Verdict

England improved in the second T20I, but it is still India who has an edge. They have a number of match winners for these conditions, as was evident in how Tilak Varma rose to the challenge in Chennai. I am stopping short of backing India to win here but instead backing them to score the most 6s.
