Pakistan vs West Indies First Test

Pakistan and the West Indies are out of contention for the WTC final, but there’s still pride at stake as the teams begin their two-match Test series. The first of the matches will be played at the Multan Cricket Stadium from Friday, with action set to begin at 10 am IST.

The Men in Green had a rough time in South Africa but should enjoy getting back to home venues. Multan will be a slow turner, and that could play to the advantage of their spinners, who won them the matches against England. I am backing them to do the job again here.

Away from home, the Windies lost 6 of their last 7 matches (Tests).

Head to Head

Pakistan and the West Indies have played 54 Tests so far, with 21 wins for the Men in Green and 18 for the Islanders. The remaining 15 ended in a draw.

These teams last played in this format in August 2021 when Pakistan visited the West Indies, and a two-Test series ended 1-1.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan is 8th in the WTC standings and is already ruled out of the running for the final. They are coming off a 2-0 series loss to South Africa away from home.

The series was a disaster for their batters, although Babar Azam, with three 50+ series in four innings, was the star of the show, along with captain Shan Masood, who scored their lone century.

The hosts made a raft of changes for this series, with uncapped Muhammad Hurraira getting called up along with a recall for Imam-ul-Haq. The bowling unit has been completely revamped too, with Mohammad Abbas, Aamer Jamal, Mir Hamza, and Naseem Shah all left out.

Pakistan Team News

The hosts could be set to field spinners Sajid Khan and Noman Ali, while Abrar Ahmed could also find a place with the spinning conditions.

West Indies Form

West Indies remain rooted to the bottom of the WTC points tally with 24.24 percentage of points. They were last seen in a two-match series against Bangladesh at home last November, with the series ending 1-1.

Justin Greaves and Alick Athanaze have been the standout batters for the Windies, while Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph have taken 9+ wickets, leading their bowling charts.

This is the final series of their ongoing WTC cycle, and the visitors recalled spinner Gudakesh Motie, while Alzarri Joseph is unavailable for selection. Batter Amir Jangoo got his maiden Test call-up, while pacer Shamar Joseph has been sidelined.

West Indies Team News

Jangoo may have to wait for his Test cap, while Anderson Phillip and Tevin Imlach could be out too. For the final spot, it could be a toss-up between Justin Greaves and Kevin Sinclair.

Verdict

Pakistan v West Indies - 1st Test

Pakistan had a tough outing down in South Africa, where they were dominated by the Protea bowlers. They come back to familiar climes, one where they came back to defeat England. This could be a chance to get back to winning ways, and I am backing Pakistan to win here.
