Teams & Format
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is the highest level of domestic T20 cricket played in Sri Lanka.
The tournament is played in the T20 format, meaning each game provides teams with a maximum of 20 overs (120 deliveries) to bat and 20 overs in the field. The T20 format is the shortest of the three major types of cricket.
The T20 game is the format that has grown the quickest recently, with the shortened game seeing big shots and flying wickets. With so little time between the first and last delivery, games are shorter meaning there is more action.
The LPL sees the following teams involved in battling for the title:
- Colombo Kaps
- Dambulla Sixers
- Galle Marvels
- Jaffna Kings
- Kandy Royals
The format of the competition will see the five teams battling in a double round-robin format that head into the playoffs. At the end of the regular season, the teams finishing in first and second head into Qualifier 1, with the winner moving into the final. The sides finishing in third and fourth head into the Eliminator, with the winner taking on the loser of Qualifier 1 for a place in the Grand Final.
Key Teams & Prospects
| Team | Prospects |
|---|---|
| Colombo Kaps | With a best finish as runners-up in 2022, the Kaps then faltered in 2023 and 2024, finishing in fifth and fourth respectively |
| Dambulla Sixers | Like the Kaps, the Dambulla Sixers followed up finishing as runners-up in 2023 with a poor season in 2024 as they finished in fifth |
| Galle Marvels | Seemingly always usurped in the final, the Galle Marvels have finished as runners-up three times including last season |
| Jaffna Kings | Undoubtedly the best side in the short history of the LPL, the Jaffna Kings are aiming to secure their fifth title in six attempts |
| Kandy Royals | The only side to ever stop the Kings from securing a title, the Kandy Royals triumphed in 2023 |
Lanka Premier League Popular Betting Markets
- Most Sixes: T20 cricket has become as much about clearing the fence as anything else, with some of the most destructive batters turning their hand to the shortest format of the game. While it is not as simple as just swinging the bat at the ball, the best hitters are able to bide their time and go after the bowlers when the ball is not doing as much or time is ebbing away.
- LPL Winner: The winner of the tournament is not always the most consistent side due to the format of the competition. A team could finish at the top of the standings only to lose the first Qualifier before then being knocked out in the second Qualifier. Sometimes, this type of competition is all about picking the best knockout side.
