Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings IPL

The El Clasico of the Indian Premier League returns, with stakes even higher than ever, as the Mumbai Indians host the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. This will be match #38 of the IPL 2025 campaign and will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, with action set to start from 7:30 pm IST.

Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings IPL FAQs

Unlike their clashes of the past, Mumbai and Chennai are struggling in the bottom half of the points table. That takes nothing away from the context of this match, and Mumbai have an extra incentive of avenging the defeat in the reverse fixture. I am backing Mumbai to score more 6s in this match, especially as Chennai have been struggling with the big hits.

Chennai average five sixes per match in this campaign, the lowest of all franchises.
Mumbai hit the most 6s of the match in 3 of their last 5 matches.
Chennai conceded the most 6s of the match in their last 6 matches.
Mumbai average eight sixes per match in this IPL campaign.

Head to Head

The classic rivalry between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings has been played out 40 times so far, with Mumbai winning 21 and Chennai winning 19.

Interestingly, Mumbai have been struggling to turn up in recent times against Chennai, losing six of the last seven, including four in a row. That includes a four-wicket loss in the reverse fixture when the sides met earlier in Chennai.

Mumbai Indians Form

Ahead of this weekend’s matches, Mumbai are seventh in the points tally with six points from seven matches (W3, L4). They are coming off back-to-back wins, defeating Delhi Capitals by 12 runs and Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets.

Suryakumar Yadav (265 runs, SR 151.42) is their highest run scorer in the tournament, but there are concerns over Rohit Sharma’s form (82 runs, SR 143.85) with the bat.

While their batters remain hot and cold, captain Hardik Pandya (11 wickets, ER 9.15) has stepped up with the ball. They are still waiting for the duo of Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar to start taking powerplay wickets.

Mumbai Indians Team News

Mumbai may continue with the same team, unless they are looking to shake things up by replacing Boult with Reece Topley.

Chennai Super Kings Form

Chennai Super Kings are bottom of the points tally with four points (W2, L5) and have a negative run rate (minus 1.276). They are coming off a five-wicket win over Lucknow, which ended a run of five consecutive defeats.

Regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is ruled out of the season, and Chennai are still struggling to take off. Rachin Ravindra (186 runs) and Shivam Dube (180) lead their scoring charts, but with only 34 sixes in the season, it’s evident they are struggling with the big hits.

Chennai’s bowling duties are spearheaded by Noor Ahmad (12) and Khaleel Ahmed (11), but it is sure that their problems lie elsewhere with the bat.

Chennai Super Kings Team News

Shaik Rasheed impressed on his debut and could keep his place. Gurjanpreet Singh has been replaced in the squad by Dewald Brevis, but will the big hitter get a game straight away?

Verdict

Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings - T20

Mumbai and Chennai have been struggling for consistency this season, although when these sides meet, form goes out the window. It’s Mumbai’s chance to win three in a row, and I believe they are likely to start on the front foot with their big hits. I am backing the Mumbai Indians to hit the most 6s.
