Indian Premier League Schedule

The 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) will be the 20th iteration of a competition that throws together the best T20 batsmen, bowlers and fielders in the men's game. The result is a tournament that sees the ball sailing out of stadiums, wickets splintered and stunning catches on the boundary coming as standard.

With massive Indian superstars like Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah playing alongside overseas diamonds like Jos Buttler, Pat Cummins and Quinton de Kock, it is no wonder why the IPL has become the main event in domestic T20 cricket.

    Teams & Format

Founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the IPL has looked to represent cities and states from across India via 10 sides that are crammed with world class talent. No side has been able to completely dominate the competition, with this simply underlining how competitive the tournament is.

The 2026 season saw a shake up in the format of the competition. The 10 teams were placed into a single group with each side playing the other nine teams twice in a double round robin format.

At the end of the group-stage, the top two sides will play in Qualifier 1. The winner of this match will go straight into the Grand Final. The loser of Qualifier 1 will play the winner of the Eliminator (contested by the sides finishing in third and fourth). The winner of Qualifier 2 will move into the Grand Final.

    Key Teams & Season Prospects

    Team Name
    Season Performance/Prospects
Gujarat TitansExciting players carried the side to second in 2026, but there needs to be a re-think to their middle-order as their top three batters carried the side.
Kolkata Knight RidersDespite winning the competition in 2024, KKR were left to rue what might have been in 2026 as they finished seventh. A big bounce back is needed this time round.
Mumbai IndiansMI's 2026 season was very disappointing, with the side spared bottom of the standings by their slightly superior net run rate to LSG.
Chennai Super KingsCSK finished four points short of the playoff spots with the side unable to keep pace with the best in 2026.
Royal Challengers BangaloreThe double-reigning champions, RCB were deserved winners in 2026 after storming to the top of the table and winning both of their knockout games.
Delhi CapitalsA sixth-placed finish in 2026 saw DC finish two points below RR in fourth, with the side not consistent enough at the business end of the season.
Rajasthan RoyalsRR battled to fourth in the regular season before making it through to the second Eliminator. However, it was one game too many for the side as they were knocked out by GT one step before the final.
Sunrisers HyderabadFinishing third in the regular season, SRH were hammered by RR in the first Eliminator, with their season trundling to a premature end.
Punjab KingsPBKS were a point short of RR in fourth after a battling season that saw them barely miss out on a playoff berth.
Lucknow Super GiantsLSG were very poor across the season, with four wins coming alongside 10 defeats and a bottom of the table finish.

    History, Winners & Key Players

The IPL has seen a range of teams secure the title over the years:

    • Mumbai Indians: 5 titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020)
    • Chennai Super Kings: 5 titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023)
    • Kolkata Knight Riders: 3 titles (2012, 2014, 2024)
    • Royal Challengers Bangalore: 2 titles (2025, 2026)
    • Rajasthan Royals: 1 title (2008)
    • Deccan Chargers: 1 title (2009)
    • Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 title (2016)
    • Gujarat Titans: 1 title (2022)
    • Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, Rising Pune Supergiant, Gujarat Lions, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala (0 titles)

The 2026 IPL saw Royal Challengers Bangalore defend the title they won in 2025 as they made it consecutive trophies in the biggest domestic competition in the game.

The biggest name in the IPL and perhaps cricket is Virat Kohli. The Royal Challengers Bangalore legend has scored the most runs in IPL history and he shows no signs of slowing down. With the ball, Yuzvendra Chahal has snared 233 wickets, with the bowler no stranger to bundling the opposition batsmen out.

As far as the most expensive players in the history of the tournament, you need look no further than Rishabh Pant. The Lucknow Super Giant was bought in 2025 for 27 crore. This eclipses the massive totals that Cameron Green (25.25 crore), Mitchell Starc (24.75 crore) and Sam Curran (18.5 crore) fetched in the 2026, 2024 and 2023 seasons respectively.
