Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Titans IPL FAQs

With a strong winning momentum, Mumbai are on course to finish in the top four and even in the top two. Gujarat also are looking like favourites to finish in the top two, and the winner here will get an advantage in that race. I am tilting towards the home side in this encounter.

Mumbai won their last 6 matches.
Mumbai won 4 of their 5 home matches this season, the most by any franchise.
Gujarat Titans lost 2 of their recent 3 away matches.
Gujarat lost on their last 2 visits to this venue in the IPL.

Head to Head

Mumbai Indians played Gujarat Titans in six matches so far, with two wins for Mumbai and four victories for Gujarat. The Titans won the last three encounters between these teams.

That included a 36-run win for Gujarat earlier in the season when the sides met in match #9 of the campaign. Sai Sudharsan’s knock (63 off 41) led the Titans to 196 for 8, and the Mumbai Indians could only score 160 for 6. Prasidh Krishna (2 for 18) was the best bowler for Gujarat, while Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 28) and Hardik Pandya (2 for 29) led the Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians Form

After 54 matches, the Mumbai Indians are third with 14 points from 11 matches (W7, L4). They are only two points off the leaders, RCB, and level on points with Gujarat.

Delhi Capitals, who play Sunrisers on Monday, can get level on points with Mumbai with a win. However, Mumbai have the edge of having a better run rate (+1.274) thanks largely to their six wins in a row.

Mumbai’s batting hero for the season has been SKY (475 runs, SR 172.72), while Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton are slowly getting into their groove as openers. With the ball, Trent Boult (16 wickets) and Jasprit Bumrah (11 wickets, ER 6.96) have been their leaders.

Mumbai Indians Team News

Mumbai may opt for the red soil pitch and hence could go with the same combination.

Gujarat Titans Form

Gujarat are fourth in the standings after Sunday’s match with 14 points from 10 matches (W7, L3) and a healthy run rate (+0.867). They can be joined on 14 points by Delhi Capitals if they win against Hyderabad on Monday.

They have the advantage of playing their last two games at home, just in case they need wins to confirm a top-two spot. They will prioritise improving their away form, given that they have lost two of their last three trips.

Gujarat’s top three batters have been in splendid form, aggregating at least 465 runs – Sudharsan (504), Jos Buttler (470), and Shubman Gill (465). Bowling duties are ably led by Prasidh Krishna (19 wickets, ER 7.48).

Gujarat Titans Team News

Gujarat have the option of trying out Dasun Shanaka or Sherfane Rutherford in place of Shahrukh Khan or even Rahul Tewatia, who was used only sparingly in the season.

Verdict

Mumbai Indians v Gujarat Titans - T20

The winner of this tie gets a minor advantage in the race to finish top four, if not top two. Mumbai’s home conditions give them a slight edge, and I am putting my money on their win.
