Islamabad United vs Multan Sultans PSL

It’s a repeat of the 2024 PSL final as defending champions Islamabad United look to continue their red-hot form in this year’s competition against Multan Sultans. This will be match #7 of the 2025 tournament and will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

Two wins out of two to start the tournament have perhaps outshone even Islamabad’s own expectations. They can now end their Rawalpindi leg with a win before coming back to this venue for their last two league matches of the season. Can Multan end their dream start? On current form, it looks difficult, and I am backing United to continue winning.

Multan lost their 2 recent matches at this venue in the PSL.
Multan lost 3 of their 4 recent matches against Islamabad in the PSL.
Islamabad won their last 7 matches in the PSL.
Islamabad won 5 of their last 6 matches at this venue in the PSL.

Head to Head

It can’t get any closer for this fixture, as the sides have won eight matches each in the 16 matches they played against each other. That said, Islamabad won three of the last four, including the last two.

Last season, these sides played each other three times, with Multan winning one and Islamabad winning two. In the league phase, Multan won by five wickets in Multan, while Islamabad returned the favour by three wickets at this venue. When the sides met again in the final, it was Islamabad’s turn again to win by two wickets.

Islamabad United Form

It’s a dream start to the PSL 2025 campaign for Islamabad, winning both their matches. Not just wins; they won both comprehensively, defeating Lahore Qalandars by eight wickets with 14 balls to spare and Peshawar Zalmi by 102 runs.

These results place them at the top of the table with four points and a whopping NRR of positive 3.248. Another win will make them early favourites to confirm a top-four spot in the regular phase.

Sahibzada Farhan underlined his growing credentials with a stunning century in the second match, while Colin Munro (99 runs) has scored 40+ in both matches. With the ball, Shadab Khan’s redemption (five wickets) and Imad Wasim’s control (ER 5.87) put the focus back on their seniors.

Matthew Short could fancy a game in place of the struggling Andries Gous, who had scores of 0 and 4.

Multan Sultans Form

Multan Sultans are perhaps one of the most consistent PSL sides of the recent past, making it to the final for four seasons in a row. They did start on a wrong note, though, losing a high-scoring thriller to Karachi Kings by four wickets at the National Stadium last weekend.

Captain Mohammad Rizwan led through the innings with an unbeaten 105 off 63 balls, with Michael Bracewell (44 off 17) providing the finishing touches to their score of 234 for 3.

Stunningly, that proved to be inadequate as Jas Vince (101 off 43) and Khushdil Shah (60 off 37) controlled the chase to win in 19.2 overs. Akif Javed added to his growing reputation with 3 for 41 in his four overs.

Multan Sultans Team News

Joshua Little or Gudakesh Motie could be an option for the Sultans if they feel David Willey and/or Chris Jordan were way too expensive after combining for figures of 5.2-0-88-0 in the first match.

Verdict

Islamabad United v Multan Sultans - T20

Both teams played on different grounds, so it’s difficult to gauge early form. Yet, Islamabad seems to have set the pace nicely and are likely to win here. I am backing Islamabad to win.
