Indian Cricket
From the days of being on the periphery of world cricket to being the core of everything, Indian cricket has come a long way. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is perhaps one of the three strongest cricket boards, if not the strongest, in the world.
One of the biggest reasons for India cricket’s popularity is the eyeballs it gets - both on and off the stadia. There’s an old saying in the world of cricket that even if India plays in Antarctica, the stadium would be full.
Such is the popularity of the sport, the sportsmen, and the attention that Indian cricket has gone from strength leaps and bounds in the last few decades.
While it's easy to criticize the influence of India on the global stage, one can’t brush aside the fact that BCCI makes the most of the popularity of the sport.
Be it the super-popular T20 vehicle of the Indian Premier League (IPL) or any bilateral series - especially against Australia or England - there’s enough for the marketing gurus to put Indian cricket left, right, and center on the global map.
That’s perhaps why every global tournament features the Indian players at the forefront of every advertisement, and India gets the best schedule to make it easy for the viewers in the subcontinent.
Success in all formats is what defines Indian cricket over the years. That’s evident in how they reached the finals of the first two World Test Championships and won the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup two times each.
The most famous tournaments in Indian cricket are the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and the IPL, apart from the bilateral tournaments and World Cups.
Indian Premier League
The Indian Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Played from March to May each year, the IPL is one of the world's most popular T20 tournaments and features the biggest names in the sport.
There are 10 teams that play in the Indian Premier League. Two new teams have been added for 2022 namely the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
They joined eight IPL teams with the entire competition played by the Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Ranji Trophy
Each state and union territory in India has at least one team in the tournament, and there are 38 teams currently participating in the Ranji Trophy.
Initially, the teams were divided into geographic zones (North, East, West, and South), with a new zone (Central) added later. Over the years, the format changed, and then the current two-division structure was adopted.
The Ranji Trophy then moved into two groups: Elite and Plate. What started as a two-tier structure evolved into a three-tier tournament.
Currently, the teams play in the top tiers of Elite Group A and Elite Group B, with a second tier in Elite Group C and a third tier in Plate Group.
The top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, from which stage it would be knockouts.
There were six teams placed in the Plate Group, with the top four teams making it to the Plate semi-finals and thereby to the finals to determine who gets promoted to the Elite Group in the next season.
Duleep Trophy
The Duleep Trophy is a domestic first class cricket competition played in India. With the first edition contested in the 1961/62 season, the competition has become an integral part of the cricket season in India.
A total of six zones battle for the trophy, with the West Zone the most successful zone with 19 titles. The 2024/25 season will deviate from the traditional format, with India A, India B, India C and India D taking part as opposed to the traditional zonal teams.
