India vs New Zealand Women World T20 Preview

India take on New Zealand in their first match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday, October 4.

The Kiwis look low on morale as they have lost the last 10 matches they have played in this format and will have to overcome a lot of mental barriers to make it out of the group stages in this tournament.

India start as the favourites in this match, with their batters Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur expected to score big.

Head to Head

New Zealand have the advantage over India in head-to-head encounters as they have won nine out of the 13 T20I matches played between the two sides.

India have won the other four games, and recent form suggests that they will have a massive edge over their opponents in this one.

India Form

India are in excellent form, having won four out of the last five matches that they have played in the T20I format.

While the loss against Sri Lanka in the final of the Women's Asia Cup held in July will rankle Harmanpreet's girls, they won the two warmup matches that they played ahead of the World Cup, and this is bound to give them a lot of confidence.

Jemimah Rodriges, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma have all shown signs of being in good touch, and we expect them to carry it forward into the World Cup.

Harmanpreet leads a belligerent team that knows its time has come. A lot will be expected from the Women in Blue in this tournament, and they will hope to deliver and bring the T20 World Cup title home like their male counterparts did earlier this year.

The likes of Deepti, Mandhana and Richa Ghosh are the players to watch out for against New Zealand.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand come into the World Cup on the back of 10 consecutive losses in this format, and it will prove to be extremely worrying for them.

They missed out on making it to the semifinals of the 2023 T20 World Cup and will find it difficult this year as well given that they are clubbed alongside heavyweights India and Australia in the same group.

Amelia Kerr, however, is a player to watch out for. The leg-spin bowling all-rounder has the capability to turn games around entirely on her own.

While Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates provide the experience to this New Zealand side, the aforementioned Kerr will give it a boost of youth.

The Kiwis will have to be at their best against the Indians to eke out a positive result, which does not seem likely given the way they have performed in their recent matches.
