    USA Cricket

Cricket in the USA has become immensely popular in the last few years, particularly with the advent of Major League Cricket (MLC), the premier T20 tournament in the USA. The USA has held Associate Member status with ODI status with the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1965.

The USA cricket team was set up by the United States of America Cricket Association (USACA). However, in June 2017, the USACA was expelled on account of financing issues. In January 2019, a new entity USA Cricket, was officially awarded Associate Member status. Two stadiums in the USA have ODI status: the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill and the Moosa Stadium in Texas.

    History of USA Cricket

Cricket has been a regular part of USA’s history, dating back to the early part of the 18th century. The USA participated in the first international cricket match, against Canada at the St George’s Cricket Club Ground in New York in 1844. USA played regular matches against Canada for more than a century as part of the Auty Cup.

However, cricket lost its early popularity shortly after, towards the 1850s and 1860s as baseball gained a footing in the country. Cricket only started to pick back up towards the end of the 20th century.

The USA made an appearance at the 1979 ICC Trophy in England. The team’s first official ODI was against New Zealand at The Oval in London in September 2004 as part of the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, a game they lost by 210 runs. That appearance was made possible after USA won the 2004 ICC Six Nations Challenge. The USA also finished sixth in the ICC Trophy in 2001, their best performance in the tournament so far.

In 2004, the USA participated in a first-class match as part of the inaugural ICC Intercontinental Cup. In August 2005, the USA were removed from the Intercontinental Cup that year due to legal disputes.

The USA returned to international cricket a year later, in August 2006, in Division One of the ICC Americas Championship, played in Canada. Out of five teams, the USA finished second.

    USACA Complications

In an ICC review, the ICC suspended USACA after there were significant concerns over the governance, finance and reputation of activities of the USACA. That suspension immediately cut off funding for the USACA.

"The ICC Board has made this difficult decision after careful consideration and in the best interest of the game and all cricketers in the USA," the ICC chairman N Srinivasan said at the time. "The country has tremendous potential but because of governance, financial and cricketing challenges, the opportunity to grow the game is not being properly nurtured.”

    T20 Progress in the USA

The ICC awarded Full Member status for T20Is to its member nations in April 2018, which meant that all T20s from January 1, 2019 would have T20I status. The USA played its first official T20I against the UAE at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai in March 2019.

The USA co-hosted the 2024 T20 World Cup along with the West Indies. In the first game of that tournament, the USA beat Canada by seven wickets in one of the longest active rivalries in cricket. The USA then went on to upset Pakistan in the second match, which led to their progress to the Super Eights, a monumental landmark in the history of USA cricket.

    Major League Cricket (MLC)

The Major League Cricket is the premier T20 competition played in the USA. The tournament is governed by USA Cricket and administered and operated by American Cricket Enterprises (ACE). The first edition of the MLC was played in 2023 with six teams representing major cities across the USA.

The history of the MLC dates back to November 2018 when USA Cricket announced plans to create a domestic T20 league in the country. After several complications in the subsequent years, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the league officially launched in 2023.

The six city-based teams in the MLC:

    • Los Angeles Knight Riders
    • MI New York
    • San Francisco Unicorns
    • Seattle Orcas
    • Texas Super Kings
    • Washington Freedom
