Sri Lanka vs New Zealand First ODI

There was very little to separate Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the two T20Is, which they ended up sharing 1-1. The teams now gear up for the three-match ODI series, starting with the first one at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on Wednesday with the match set to start at 2:30pm IST.

Sri Lanka don’t have much to look forward to in this format, as they are not scheduled to participate in the Champions Trophy. New Zealand, on the other hand, will look to get some wins under their belt. It may come as a surprise, but the conditions here give the Kiwis a slight advantage.

Head to Head

Sri Lanka and New Zealand played each other in 102 ODIs so far, with 41 wins for the Lankans and 52 victories for the Kiwis. One match ended in a tie, while eight finished without a result.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka are coming off a 1-1 draw in the T20Is against the Kiwis, but it is the 2-1 series win against the West Indies in the ODIs that will push them to be confident.

The Lankans have also defeated India 2-0, so the team would be looking to make these matches count. It could be a low-scoring series once again, as Sri Lanka have seen 250 pass just twice in their last 12 home ODIs.

With no Champions Trophy action for the hosts, they will perhaps be using this series for future planning.

Sri Lanka Team News

Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the ODIs with an injury, and Dushan Hemantha has been called up as cover. It’s unlikely that he gets a game here.

New Zealand Form

The Kiwis are flying high in recent times, be it the Test series win in India or the T20I series performances here. The Black Caps are stacked with some unfamiliar names but are likely to put up a tight fight.

Mitchell Santner, who was the hero of their Test series win in India, will captain the side, which is missing some regular players. This is a great option for the stand-in captain and some fringe players to make their mark.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand will miss the services of Lockie Ferguson, who was injured in the third T20I and is replaced by Adam Milne. He could get a game here, considering the conditions.

Verdict

New Zealand have long enjoyed being the underdogs and punching above their weight. Even in the series against India, they enjoyed being written off and then delivered the knockout punches. I am backing the Kiwis to continue with their giant killing act and win this match.
