India vs New Zealand Third Test

New Zealand did the unthinkable by winning the first two Tests and winning a series in India. Not many teams have done that, and the Kiwis are now on the verge of posting a series whitewash, something only one side has ever achieved in the past. Will Mumbai witness the historic feat?

India struggled to rise up to New Zealand’s challenge in both matches of the series. Their batters have struggled for impact, while the bowlers haven’t been able to impart the same influence as their Kiwi counterparts. I am backing the visitors to continue the trend and end up with another win.

  • India lost their last 2 matches against New Zealand at home (Tests)
  • India lost 2 of their last 6 matches at this venue (Tests)

Head to Head

There have been 64 Tests between India and New Zealand so far, with the Men in Blue winning 22, the Kiwis winning 15, and the remaining 27 ending in draws.

The two Tests of this series were played in Bengaluru and Pune, with the Kiwis winning by eight wickets and by 113 runs, respectively. They have never won a series before in India and can now go on to make it a whitewash.

India Form

India still leads the WTC standings, but their path to the final is tougher after those twin losses. They now have to win four of the next six Tests, starting with this one and the rest down under.

It has been a tough series for the Indian batters, who couldn’t answer the Kiwi spinners. Sarfaraz Khan (170 runs) has the most runs for the hosts, with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma together aggregating fewer than him.

Washington Sundar’s 11 wickets in the Pune Test are the best among the Indian bowlers, and that tells a lot. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin combined for 12 wickets in four innings between them, a real letdown for the home team.

India Team News

India could be tempted to go with four spinners, in which case Axar Patel could replace Akash Deep. There’s a clamor to rest Jasprit Bumrah in view of the upcoming long series in Australia and debut the rookie speedster Harshit Rana.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand are fourth in the standings after the first two wins and have a straightforward ask. They need to win their remaining four Tests, starting with this one and three to follow against England at home.

The Kiwis have excelled in all departments and, surprisingly, dominated the hosts in their own game. Rachin Ravindra (247 runs) has been a revelation, while Devon Conway (201) has got two fifties in the series so far.

With the ball, it is Mitch Santner who leads the way with 13 wickets after just one Test. Matt Henry had eight to his name from Bengaluru, while Will O’Rourke has seven.

New Zealand Team News

Kane Williamson continues to be out of reckoning, which means their only selection dilemma could be in the bowling department. There’s Ish Sodhi waiting in the wings, but it could be Matt Henry replacing one of the quicks.

Verdict

Beating India at home once is a tough task. Beating them back-to-back? That’s almost impossible. And whitewashing them? That has happened only once, so New Zealand are on the cusp of something immense. They certainly have the form, acumen, and finesse to achieve that. Back the visitors to win here.
