Teams & Format
Founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the IPL has looked to represent cities and states from across India via 10 sides that are crammed with world class talent. No side has been able to completely dominate the competition, with this simply underlining how competitive the tournament is.
The 2025 season has seen a shake up in the format of the competition. The 10 teams have been split into two groups. Sides from Group A will play the other four teams in their group twice. They will also play the team in the same row in the other group twice, and once against the other four.
At the end of the group-stage, the top two sides will play in Qualifier 1. The winner of this match will go straight into the Grand Final. The loser of Qualifier 1 will play the winner of the Eliminator (contested by the sides finishing in third and fourth). The winner of Qualifier 2 will move into the Grand Final.
The groups for the 2025 IPL are as follows:
Group A | Group B |
---|---|
Chennai Super Kings | Mumbai Indians |
Kolkata Knight Riders | Sunrisers Hyderabad |
Rajasthan Royals | Gujarat Titans |
Royal Challengers Bangalore | Delhi Capitals |

The biggest name in the IPL and perhaps cricket is Virat Kohli. The Royal Challengers Bangalore legend has scored the most runs in IPL history and he shows no signs of slowing down. With the ball, Yuzvendra Chahal has snared 219 wickets, with the bowler no stranger to bundling the opposition batsmen out.
MS Dhoni is another name that has become synonymous with the competition. The Chennai Super Kings boast his vast experience, with the wicket-keeper batsman as comfortable whipping the bails off in a smart run-out as he is smashing sixes.
As far as the most expensive players in the history of the tournament, you need look no further than Rishabh Pant. The Lucknow Super Giants was bought in 2025 for 27 crore. This eclipsed the massive totals that Mitchell Starc (24.75 crore) and Sam Curran (18.5 crore) fetched in the 2024 and 2023 seasons respectively.
