The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) will be the 19th iteration of a competition that throws together the best T20 batsmen, bowlers and fielders in the men's game. The result is a tournament that sees the ball sailing out of stadiums, wickets splintered and stunning catches on the boundary coming as standard.

With massive Indian superstars like Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah playing alongside overseas diamonds like Jos Buttler, Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell, it is no wonder why the IPL has become the main event in domestic T20 cricket.

    Teams & Format

Founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the IPL has looked to represent cities and states from across India via 10 sides that are crammed with world class talent. No side has been able to completely dominate the competition, with this simply underlining how competitive the tournament is.

The 2025 season saw a shake up in the format of the competition. The 10 teams were split into two groups. Sides from Group A will play the other four teams in their group twice. They will also play the team in the same row in the other group twice, and once against the other four.

At the end of the group-stage, the top two sides will play in Qualifier 1. The winner of this match will go straight into the Grand Final. The loser of Qualifier 1 will play the winner of the Eliminator (contested by the sides finishing in third and fourth). The winner of Qualifier 2 will move into the Grand Final.

The groups for the 2026 IPL will be shown below as soon as they are available.

Key Teams & 2026 Season Prospects

    Team Name
    2026 Season Performance/Prospects
Gujarat TitansExciting players carried the side to third in 2025, but they ran out of steam later in the season as they were knocked out in the Eliminator.
Kolkata Knight RidersDespite winning the competition in 2024, KKR were left to rue what might have been in 2025 as they finished eighth. A big bounce back is needed this time round.
Mumbai IndiansA better 2025 season saw MI end the campaign in fourth. After beating GT in the Eliminator, they were knocked out one step before the final by PBKS.
Chennai Super KingsThings can't get much worse for CSK as they propped up the table in 2025 following a woeful campaign.
Royal Challengers BangaloreThe reigning champions, RCB beat PBKS by six runs in the final as Virat Kohli was left to raise the trophy in an emotional day for the Indian legend.
Delhi CapitalsA fifth-placed finish in 2025 saw DC finish a point below MI in fourth, with the side not consistent enough at the business end of the season.
Rajasthan RoyalsRR were nowhere near good enough in 2025 as they won just four of their 14, with the side left to rue not keeping hold of Jos Buttler.
Sunrisers HyderabadRunners-up in 2024, SRH finished 2025 in sixth, three short of MI in fourth.
Punjab KingsPBKS were outstanding in 2025, topping the table with 19 points. However, a defeat to RCB in the Qualifier was followed by a loss to the same opponent in the final.
Lucknow Super GiantsLSG were not one of the sides in contention for a playoff spot last year as eight defeats came alongside just six wins.

    History, Winners & Key Players

The IPL has seen a range of teams secure the title over the years:

    • Mumbai Indians: 5 titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020)
    • Chennai Super Kings: 5 titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023)
    • Kolkata Knight Riders: 3 titles (2012, 2014, 2024)
    • Rajasthan Royals: 1 title (2008)
    • Deccan Chargers: 1 title (2009)
    • Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 title (2016)
    • Gujarat Titans: 1 title (2022)
    • Royal Challengers Bangalore (2025)
    • Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, Rising Pune Supergiant, Gujarat Lions, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala (0 titles)

The 2025 final saw Royal Challengers Bangalore defeating Punjab Kings by six runs, securing their first IPL title.

The biggest name in the IPL and perhaps cricket is Virat Kohli. The Royal Challengers Bangalore legend has scored the most runs in IPL history and he shows no signs of slowing down. With the ball, Yuzvendra Chahal has snared 221 wickets, with the bowler no stranger to bundling the opposition batsmen out.

MS Dhoni is another name that has become synonymous with the competition. The Chennai Super Kings boast his vast experience, with the wicket-keeper batsman as comfortable whipping the bails off in a smart run-out as he is smashing sixes.

As far as the most expensive players in the history of the tournament, you need look no further than Rishabh Pant. The Lucknow Super Giants was bought in 2025 for 27 crore. This eclipsed the massive totals that Mitchell Starc (24.75 crore) and Sam Curran (18.5 crore) fetched in the 2024 and 2023 seasons respectively.
